Regina’s Teah Chavez recently participated in the $25,000 ITF Challenger in Saskatoon. Chavez won two qualifying matches to make it into the main draw. In her first main draw match, Chavez defeated USA’s Kendra Bunch (6-3, 7-5).
In the second round, Teah beat Korea’s Dabin Kim, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, (7-5, 7-5). Teah was in tough against No. 3 seed Hurricane Tyra Black (USA) in the quarter-final as she lost the match 6-2, 6-0. Congratulations Teah for a brilliant run! To make the quarters of a $25,000 Challenger is no easy feat.
Anya Chavez also qualified for the main draw, winning two qualifying matches, before losing in the first round of the main draw. In Anya’s second round qualifying match, she defeated the No. 1 seed in the qualifying draw, USA’s Tricia Mar (6-7(5), 6-1, [11-9].
These are incredible accomplishments by the Chavez sisters. Great Job!
Jana Van Niekerk, a 15-year-old from Saskatoon, also participated in the qualifying event. Great experience for our competitive junior players.
